Overview of Aligarh Fort

Aligarh Fort, also known as Aligarh Quila, is one of the most formidable forts in India. Often referred to as the "Bonay Chor ka Kila" (Dwarf Thief's Fort), this historical marvel stands as a testament to Islamic architecture and the grandeur of ancient military structures. While much of the fort is in ruins today, it still maintains its charm with striking minarets, bastions, terraces, and a grand arched entrance that calls attention to all who approach.

The fort is surrounded by lush greenery, with a beautiful garden managed by the Botanical Department of Aligarh Muslim University. The garden is home to an impressive variety of flowers, trees, and wildlife, including peacocks, koel birds, and even ferrets. This combination of history and nature makes the fort an attractive spot for visitors.

History of Aligarh Fort

The history of Aligarh Fort dates back to 1524, when it was originally constructed by Muhammad, the son of the Governor of Kol during the Lodi Dynasty. Over time, the fort underwent several renovations and reconstructions. Notably, it was further developed by French officers under the guidance of Boigne and Perron, as well as by Sabit Khan, the Governor.

The fort gained significance in 1759, when Madhavrao I Scindia chose it as a strategic base for organizing his army. In a significant turn of events, the fort was captured by the British Army, led by Lord Gerard, during the Battle of Ally Ghur.

Architecture of Aligarh Fort

The architectural design of Aligarh Fort is influenced by French styles and exhibits the grandeur of Islamic architecture. The fort is perched atop a steep hillock and features a polygon-shaped structure. It is reinforced with angled bastions, deep trenches, and an impressive array of minarets. Inside, you'll find extensive terraces, a hidden basement, and intricate carvings, all of which reflect the ingenuity of military design and Islamic aesthetics.

One of the most notable features of the fort is the garden surrounding it, which is filled with vibrant flowers and lush greenery. The garden is a perfect example of the fort's blend of military strength and natural beauty.
