Overview
Nestled within the grand Agra Fort, Anguri Bagh is a beautifully designed charbagh (a four-part garden) that was commissioned by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in 1637. A perfect blend of nature and Mughal architecture, it served as a serene retreat for the emperor, offering a space for leisure and relaxation. The garden’s layout is a stunning representation of Mughal landscaping, with four distinct sections divided by pathways and fountains, creating a harmonious balance of symmetry and beauty.

Historically known as the Garden of Grapes, Anguri Bagh was renowned for its abundant grapevines that once thrived here. The name "Anguri" (meaning "grapes" in Hindi) was derived from the vines that covered the garden, making it a unique and scenic spot in the Mughal empire. The surrounding architecture of the garden, made from fine white marble, was originally painted and gilded in gold, adding to the splendor of the space. The delicate marble carvings and intricate designs were meant to enhance the beauty of this tranquil retreat.

The Layout and Features
Anguri Bagh’s central courtyard features serene tanks, fountains, and baths (hammams), which were once used by the royal family. These water features not only added to the aesthetic appeal but also served practical purposes for cooling the area during the scorching summer months. The garden is surrounded by a semi-circular pattern of rooms, creating a harmonious space for rest and reflection. The overall design of the garden is a testament to the opulence and architectural brilliance of the Mughal era.

How to Reach Anguri Bagh

If you prefer more comfort, you can hire a taxi from anywhere in the city. Agra is well-connected through state-run buses, making the garden easily accessible from various parts of the city.
