Overview:
Tucked away in the scenic village of Sanquelim, about 30 km from Panjim, Arvalem Waterfalls (also known as Harvalem Falls) is a hidden gem in North Goa. With a height of 50 meters and a width of 7 meters, this stunning waterfall creates a large pool at its base, making it a popular spot for both tourists and picnickers. The falls are especially mesmerizing during the monsoon season when the water gushes down with immense power, creating a breathtaking spectacle. However, after the monsoon, the falls reduce to a gentle trickle, so visiting shortly after the rains provides the best view of its majestic form.

The site has been developed by the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC), with protective railings and an organized park offering excellent vantage points for visitors to admire the beauty of the waterfall. The surrounding area is equally enchanting, surrounded by lush greenery and the peaceful Rudreshwar Temple, adding a spiritual touch to the experience.

Best Time to Visit:
The best time to visit Arvalem Waterfalls is just after the monsoon, from October to March. During the monsoon, the waterfall transforms into a force of nature, with muddy brown water cascading down. However, if you prefer to experience its full grandeur, visiting shortly after the rains provides the perfect opportunity to witness the full force of nature in action, without the muddy waters.

Places to Visit Around Arvalem Waterfalls:

  • Arvalem Caves: Located just 1.5 km from the waterfall, these rock-cut caves are an important historical site. According to local legends, the Pandavas from the Mahabharata stayed here during their exile. The caves are divided into five compartments, corresponding to the five Pandava brothers. The central cave houses a Shivalinga, making it a sacred site for Hindus. Some historians believe that the caves have Buddhist origins, as evidenced by the discovery of a Buddha statue nearby, dating back to the 4th century.
  • Rudreshwar Temple: Situated just 500 meters away from the falls, the Rudreshwar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple’s location is significant as it faces the waterfall, allowing visitors to offer prayers and enjoy the majestic view of the falls simultaneously. The temple has been a place of worship for centuries and adds a spiritual element to your visit.
