Overview

The Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old Goa is one of India's oldest and most famous churches, known for its baroque architecture and rich history. Constructed between 1594 and 1605, it is home to the relics of St. Francis Xavier, a co-founder of the Jesuit Order. The church’s preserved relics are displayed in a silver casket, drawing visitors from around the world.

This church has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is renowned for its simple yet grand architecture, featuring a mix of Doric, Corinthian, and composite styles. The interior is equally breathtaking, with mosaic floors, gilded altars, and stunning frescoes of St. Francis Xavier’s life.

History

The Basilica's history traces back to 1594, when construction began under Fr. Alexia de Menezes, the Archbishop of Goa. After St. Xavier's death, his body was kept at the Basilica, and it remains in a well-preserved mausoleum. The church was elevated to minor basilica status in 1946.

  • By Air: The Dabolim Airport is 24.1 km away. Taxis are available at the airport.
