"The Majestic Chapora Fort - A Blend of History, Beauty, and Bollywood Fame"
Situated just 10 km from Mapusa, Chapora Fort stands as one of Goa’s most famous and historic landmarks. Built by the Portuguese in 1717, it has a rich history that spans centuries and continues to attract travelers worldwide. Famously known as the 'Dil Chahta Hai Fort' after being featured in the iconic Bollywood film in 2001, this fort offers panoramic views of both the Arabian Sea and the Chapora River.
Originally constructed by Adil Shah, a Muslim ruler of Bijapur, the fort was named Shahpura. Later, the Portuguese rebuilt and renamed it Chapora after the river beside it. The fort’s location and its breathtaking views of Vagator Beach and the sea make it an ideal spot, particularly during sunset.
To reach the top, visitors need to climb a steep, 10-minute ascent, but the incredible views and the fort's ruins make it well worth the effort. Though mostly in ruins, Chapora Fort still tells the tale of various rulers, including the Portuguese and Marathas, who fought for control over it. Visitors can also spot the remains of two escape tunnels constructed by the Portuguese.
History and Legends of Chapora Fort
Before the Portuguese built the fort in 1717, the Adil Shah dynasty had already established a structure here. Initially built to defend against the Marathas, the fort’s location was a strategic advantage due to its steep slopes and defensive walls. The Portuguese held it for over 150 years, despite occasional captures by Maratha forces, led by Sambhaji, who briefly took control twice.
In 1892, with Goa's borders expanding further north, the fort was abandoned by the Portuguese. According to legend, the fort's walls were considered impregnable, but Sambhaji and his men managed to scale the walls with ease, eventually gaining the respect of the Portuguese soldiers and leading to the fort's surrender.
How to Reach Chapora Fort
Chapora Fort is easily accessible from Mapusa, located just 10 km away. Visitors can either take a taxi or rent a bike to reach the fort, or take a small path from Vagator Beach. The fort is also reachable by foot by climbing a small hill from the Vagator Beach. The route to the fort starts 2 km before Vagator, where a small path leads to the hilltop.
Whether you're arriving by car, bike, or on foot, reaching Chapora Fort is an adventure in itself, offering a great opportunity to explore Goa’s historic and scenic beauty.
Chapora Fort is not just a famous Bollywood landmark, but a place full of history, adventure, and scenic vistas, perfect for families, couples, and solo travelers alike.
