The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), formerly known as Victoria Terminus, is an iconic landmark in Mumbai. History
Originally a warehouse area, CST was transformed into a station after the opening of Boree Bandar in 1853. The current station was designed by British architect F.W. Stevens and took ten years to complete, costing £260,000. It was later renamed in 1996 to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus to honor the Maratha king.
Architecture
CST’s design combines Victorian Gothic with Indian influences, featuring a central dome, high ceilings, and ornate carvings. The station’s facade, made of sandstone, limestone, and Italian marble, includes impressive turrets and intricate arches. The building houses 18 platforms, making it one of the busiest stations in India.
