With its iconic yellow facade, the church is a striking feature of Shimla's skyline. Built over 11 years, it was consecrated in 1857 and remains an enduring symbol of the British colonial era in India.

This historic church is adorned with beautiful stained glass windows, each representing a different Christian virtue: Charity, Humility, Fortitude, Faith, Patience, and Hope. The church’s towering spires, which rise to about 90 feet, its clock, and impressive brass bell make it a must-visit for architecture enthusiasts and devotees alike.

The peaceful interior offers a serene retreat, in stark contrast to the lively activity of the Ridge. Known for its majestic presence, Christ Church also features prominently in Bollywood films, including Black and 3 Idiots, adding to its popularity among tourists.

History of Christ Church

The church was born from the growing Christian population during British rule. Anglo-Indians and British officials residing in Shimla sought a place of worship. The foundation stone was laid in 1884, and after over a decade of construction, the church was consecrated in 1857 by Bishop Reverand Thomas Daltry.

Funded partly by the government and mostly through private donations, the church cost approximately INR 40,000-50,000 to build. Over time, it has become a cherished part of Shimla’s heritage, with its clock and bells being donated in the 19th century.

Architectural Highlights

The Neo-Gothic design of Christ Church is awe-inspiring, with beautiful stained glass windows, a brass plaque, and striking frescoes by Lockwood Kipling, father of author Rudyard Kipling. The church’s pipe organ is the largest in India, adding to the grandeur of the interior. The structure’s nighttime illumination creates a magical ambiance, making it a dazzling sight after dark.
