Overview
Perched on the banks of Lake Pichola, Udaipur’s City Palace is the largest royal complex in Rajasthan. Built in 1559 by Maharana Uday Singh, it served as the royal residence and administrative hub. Successive rulers expanded the palace, adding magnificent structures, creating a sprawling complex of palaces, courtyards, gardens, and museums showcasing Rajput art and culture. The palace is a blend of medieval, European, and Chinese architectural styles, admired for its domes, arches, and towers. It has been featured in films like Guide and Octopussy, further enhancing its regal charm.
Notable Structures
- Gateways: The grand entrances include the Tripolia, Bari Pol, and Hathi Pol gates.
- Amar Vilas: An elevated garden with fountains, terraces, and hanging gardens.
- Badi Mahal: The Garden Palace, featuring a pool used during Holi celebrations.
- Fateprakash Palace: Now a hotel, showcasing exquisite crystal furniture and jewel-studded carpets.
- Durbar Hall: A 1909 addition, used for official functions with sparkling chandeliers.
- Bhim Vilas & Krishna Vilas: Galleries featuring stunning Radha-Krishna miniature paintings.
History
The palace’s story intertwines with the history of the Mewar Kingdom. Founded in 568 AD, the kingdom moved its capital to Udaipur in the 16th century for safety from invaders. Maharana Uday Singh constructed the first palace structures in 1559, and over centuries, several rulers expanded it. The British took control after the Maratha conflicts, but the palace remained a symbol of royal heritage until India’s independence.
Architecture
The palace is a striking example of granite and marble construction, featuring intricate mirror work, marble carvings, murals, and inlay art. The labyrinthine corridors, designed for defense, open onto luxurious palaces offering sweeping views of Udaipur. The oldest part, Raj Angan, and Amar Vilas are among the most stunning areas.
