Overview
Eden Gardens, one of the most famous cricket stadiums in the world, is a must-visit landmark in Kolkata. Located in the B.B.D. Bagh area, near the State Secretariat and Calcutta High Court, this historic stadium was established in 1864 by Governor-General Auckland, who named it after his sisters, Emily and Fanny Eden. Spanning 50 acres, Eden Gardens has a seating capacity of 66,349, making it the second-largest stadium globally.
When not hosting thrilling cricket matches, Eden Gardens offers a serene escape for nature lovers. The grounds are lined with majestic trees like mahogany, mango, and banyan, providing a peaceful atmosphere for a leisurely stroll or quiet moments. A striking Burmese Pagoda, gifted by Lord Dalhousie, adds to the charm of the area.
Eden Gardens is the home of Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL and the Bengal cricket team. It frequently hosts major cricket tournaments, including Test matches, One Day Internationals, and T20s. You can also visit the stadium when no matches are being held, but prior permission from the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) is required.
