Overview
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Elephanta Caves are located on Elephanta Island, 11 km from Mumbai. Known for their rock-cut sculptures and temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, these caves date back to the 5th-7th century AD. Accessible by ferry from Gateway of India, the caves offer a glimpse into India's rich cultural heritage, along with stunning views of the Mumbai skyline.
The site features two main groups of caves: five Hindu temples and two Buddhist caves. Key sculptures include the iconic Trimurti, a three-headed depiction of Shiva, and Ardhanarishvara, showing Shiva and Parvati in one form.
