Overview
Bhadra Fort, located in the heart of Ahmedabad's walled city, is a historic gem built in 1411 by Ahmed Shah I. Spanning 44 acres, the fort is renowned for its intricate carvings, frescoes, latticework, and stunning arches. It was originally constructed to protect the Gujarat Sultanate. The fort’s name comes from the Bhadrakali Temple built by the Marathas on its premises. After extensive renovations by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and the Archaeological Survey of India in 2014, Bhadra Fort continues to be an important venue for major events like Republic Day and Independence Day celebrations.
Architecture
Bhadra Fort features Indo-Gothic architecture, with beautiful arches, balconies, and Islamic inscriptions adorning its entrance. Notable within the fort is the Teen Darwaza (Three-Door Gateway) at its eastern corner and the Bhadra Clock Tower, the city’s first electrical clock, which replaced a kerosene lamp in 1849.
History
Originally founded by Ahmed Shah I in 1411, Bhadra Fort was expanded by his grandson, Mahmud Begum, in 1525. Over the centuries, it passed through various hands—from the Mughals to the Marathas, and later the British, who used it as a prison until 1949.
How to Reach
Bhadra Fort is just 10 km from Sardar Vallabhbhai International Airport (20 minutes by taxi) and 3.2 km from Ahmedabad Railway Station (about 10 minutes by taxi). It is well-connected by road, with easy access from nearby cities like Vadodara, Gandhinagar, and Udaipur.
