Overview
Chattar Manzil, also known as the Umbrella Palace, is a stunning historical landmark located on the banks of the Gomti River in Lucknow. This architectural gem was originally built by Nawab Ghazi Uddin Haider and served as the royal residence for the rulers of Awadh and their families. Constructed in 1781 by the French Major General Claude Martin, the palace is an exquisite blend of Nawabi and European architectural styles.
The name Chattar Manzil (meaning "Umbrella Palace") is derived from the massive umbrella-shaped dome that adorns the structure. This palace features large underground rooms, spacious courtyards, and towering structures that showcase a fusion of Eastern and Western architectural designs. Chattar Manzil has also made a mark in modern Indian cinema, featuring in the 2013 Bollywood movie Jolly LLB 2.
Today, the palace is home to the Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI), though discussions are underway to convert it into an Awadh Museum, allowing visitors to experience its royal grandeur once more.
Chattar Manzil Architecture
Chattar Manzil is known for its iconic umbrella-shaped dome, which is supported by octagonal towers. The structure is divided into two parts: the Bari Chattar Manzil (the larger umbrella dome) and the Chhoti Chattar Manzil (the smaller dome), both of which are beautifully preserved with golden embellishments.
This five-story structure includes two basement floors and a rooftop terrace. During colonial times, the terrace was home to two telescopes, adding to the palace's allure. The grandeur of the building is matched by its intricate architectural features, making it a prime example of the era's architectural genius.
