Lal Mahal, located near Shaniwar Wada in Pune, is a historic 16th-century palace that holds a rich legacy from the Maratha era. Originally built by Shahaji Bhosle, the father of Shivaji Maharaj, it served as a residence for his family in the 1630s. The palace became the childhood home of Shivaji and witnessed numerous historical events, including the daring escape from Shaistekhan in 1663.
Though much of the structure has been damaged over time due to repeated attacks, the remaining portions reflect remarkable craftsmanship. The red-hued building showcases visual depictions of Shivaji’s life, including scenes of his childhood and military exploits. In 1988, the monument underwent renovations, and a Jijamata garden was added in tribute to Shivaji’s mother.
Today, Lal Mahal is a symbol of the Maratha dynasty’s courage and resilience. Visitors can also view a replica of Raigad Fort and explore the surrounding garden. The site is easily accessible and is an important landmark in Pune’s history.
