Situated near the picturesque Upper Lake and Shymala Hills, the park is a sanctuary for wildlife, with animals living in habitats that closely resemble their natural environments. The park offers a unique blend of natural beauty and wildlife conservation, making it a must-visit for nature enthusiasts.

With an area of 4.45 square kilometers, Van Vihar provides a safe haven for various species, from leopards, cheetahs, and panthers to birds such as kingfishers and migratory species. The park is particularly famous for sightings of the elusive white tiger, which can be spotted between July and September. A highlight of the park is the adjoining Upper Lake, which enhances the park’s beauty, especially during the winter when migratory birds flock to the area. The park is designed to ensure that animals remain safe from poaching and other illegal activities.

Animals in Van Vihar are divided into two categories:

History of Van Vihar

The history of Van Vihar dates back to a time when the land was threatened by illegal stone quarries and encroachment. However, the significance of preserving this natural space led the government to declare it a protected area in 1972, followed by its recognition as a National Park in 1983. The area spans 4.45 square kilometers, with 3.8 km² belonging to the government, and the remaining land, once owned by local villagers, was acquired for INR 23.52 Lakhs. The park has since flourished into a green lung for Bhopal, providing ecological balance and promoting wildlife conservation efforts.
