History

Fatehpur Sikri was Akbar’s capital from 1571 to 1585. It was built after a Sufi saint, Salim Chisti, predicted the birth of a Mughal heir. Akbar named the city Fatehabad, meaning "Victorious" in Persian. The city’s construction was influenced by Persian architecture, and the red sandstone used for the buildings added to its grandeur. However, due to water shortages, it was abandoned after Akbar's reign.
