Overview

Fort Aguada, a 17th-century Portuguese fort, stands majestically at the confluence of the Mandovi River and the Arabian Sea. This historic monument, perched on Sinquerim Beach just 18 km from Panjim, offers stunning views and holds rich historical significance. Built in 1612 as a defense against the Dutch and Marathas, the fort’s most notable feature is the Aguada Lighthouse, which is Asia's oldest of its kind. This four-storey lighthouse offers a panoramic view of the surrounding ocean and is a perfect spot to witness a mesmerizing sunset.

The fort is named after the Portuguese word “Agua,” which means water, as it once served as a water replenishing station for sailors. It housed a massive reservoir capable of storing 2,376,000 gallons of freshwater, making it one of the largest freshwater reserves in Asia.

Fort Aguada also served as a prison during the Portuguese era, now known as the Aguada Jail, which symbolizes Goa’s fight for freedom.

  4. Church of St. Lawrence

Fort Aguada History

Built under Ruy Tavara, the Portuguese Viceroy of Goa, the fort was initially constructed between 1609 and 1612. It was designed to defend against attacks from both the Dutch and the Marathas. The fort also served as a navigational reference for ships coming from Europe, and its lighthouse helped guide them safely into port.

With features like moats, gunpowder rooms, and a secret escape passage, the fort was built to withstand sieges and emergencies. Its architecture, made of laterite stone, stands strong despite the wear of centuries, making it a remarkable example of Portuguese architecture.
