Situated in the heart of Patna, Gandhi Maidan is an iconic and historically rich landmark that spans 60 acres along the banks of the River Ganges. This vast expanse of greenery holds immense significance, not only as a serene park for relaxation but also as a powerful symbol of India's struggle for independence. Historically, it served as a ground for political campaigns, freedom rallies, religious ceremonies, and public gatherings.

Previously known as Patna Lawns, Gandhi Maidan became the stage for many monumental moments in India’s fight for independence, where leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose, and Maulana Azad delivered stirring speeches to ignite the flame of revolution. The sprawling ground is now home to the world's tallest statue of Mahatma Gandhi, standing at an impressive 72 feet. This bronze statue graces the southwestern corner of the park, making it a popular spot for both locals and tourists.

Historical Significance:

Gandhi Maidan is not just a park but a symbol of India's enduring spirit for freedom. The grounds were originally known as Bankipore Maidan or Patna Lawns, where the British held polo matches and other elite events during their rule. However, it was transformed into a hub for nationalist activities during the freedom struggle, particularly after Mahatma Gandhi's visit during the Champaran Satyagraha in 1917. The venue played host to major political rallies and campaigns, including the Quit India Movement and Champaran Satyagraha, leading to its rechristening as Gandhi Maidan in honor of the Father of the Nation.

The ground has also witnessed numerous post-independence political events, such as Lal Krishna Advani's Rath Yatra in 1990 and Jayaprakash Narayan's Sampoorn Kranti (Total Revolution) call in the 1970s. It is a place that has shaped the history of both Bihar and India.

The Maidan is open all day, making it convenient for visitors at any time. However, the best time to visit is during the early morning or late evening when the temperature is cool and the ground is less crowded. These hours offer a tranquil atmosphere, perfect for walking, jogging, or just enjoying the scenic surroundings as the sun rises or sets over the city.

How to Reach Gandhi Maidan:

By Air:
The nearest airport is Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport, located around 8 km from Gandhi Maidan. From the airport, you can take a taxi or auto-rickshaw to reach the park in 20-30 minutes.

By Train:
Patna Junction is the closest railway station, about 2 km away from Gandhi Maidan. The station is well-connected to major cities, and from there, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to reach the site.

By Road:
Gandhi Maidan is centrally located in Patna and can be easily reached by taxi, auto-rickshaw, or private vehicle. The area is well connected by major roads such as Ashok Rajpath, Exhibition Road, and Fraser Road. Public buses also serve the Maidan, with stops at Mahendrughat and Ashok Rajpath.
