Overview
The Gateway of India, one of Mumbai’s most iconic landmarks, stands majestically at Apollo Bunder, overlooking the Arabian Sea. This historical monument, completed in 1924, was designed by British architect George Wittet to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary. Built in a mix of Indian, Arabic, and Western architectural styles, it has become a symbol of the city’s rich heritage and a must-visit for tourists.
Nicknamed "Mumbai's Taj Mahal", the Gateway is made of yellow basalt and solid concrete, adorned with Hindu and Muslim motifs. Historically, it served as the entry point for British royalty and was the site of the departure of the last British troops from India in 1948. Statues of great leaders like Swami Vivekananda and Chhatrapati Shivaji are located near the monument, further adding to its significance.
Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the Arabian Sea, especially at sunset, making the Gateway of India an ideal spot for photos and relaxation.
