Overview of Ghanta Ghar
Nestled in the bustling heart of Jodhpur, the Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower) stands as a timeless symbol of the city’s history. Built by Maharaja Sardar Singh over 200 years ago, this architectural marvel is often referred to as the Clock Tower of Rajasthan. The tower serves as an iconic landmark, marking the beginning of Old Jodhpur. Its panoramic views of the city make it a must-see for visitors looking to capture the essence of Jodhpur.
Surrounded by the lively Sardar Market, Ghanta Ghar is located in the heart of one of Jodhpur’s busiest marketplaces, where locals and tourists alike can shop for spices, textiles, and handicrafts. At night, the tower is beautifully lit, offering a stunning sight and bringing the market area to life.
History of Ghanta Ghar
The Ghanta Ghar was constructed during the reign of Maharaja Sardar Singh in the late 19th century to serve as a prominent landmark. It is said that the clock mechanism was imported from London, crafted by the same company responsible for the London Clock Tower. Over the years, the area around Ghanta Ghar transformed into a thriving market, with Sardar Market becoming one of the most popular and bustling places in Jodhpur. Initially, the market offered a variety of goods like spices, vegetables, and textiles, but today, it is a vibrant commercial hub where a mix of traditional and modern items can be found.
Architecture of Ghanta Ghar
The Ghanta Ghar is a classic example of 19th-century stone masonry, constructed entirely from sandstone, in harmony with the nearby Mehrangarh Fort. The tower features a five-tiered structure, topped with a dome as its sixth level. Key architectural elements include:
- Ground Level: The base is square-shaped with patios and ornate jharokhas (overhanging balconies), surrounded by an octagonal stone fence.
- First and Second Tiers: These levels feature finely carved stone jharokhas, adding to the tower’s elegance.
- Fourth Tier: This is where the iconic stone clock resides.
- Fifth Tier: A small chhatri (canopy) with arches and pillars crowns the structure, providing a charming, regal touch.
