Overview of Happy Valley Tea Estate, Darjeeling

Nestled at an elevation of 6,800 feet, the Happy Valley Tea Estate is one of Darjeeling's oldest and most scenic tea plantations. Spanning over 437 acres, this estate is renowned for producing some of the world’s finest teas, including the Super Fine Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe (SFTGFOP). Visitors to this estate are not only treated to the aroma of fresh tea leaves but also to panoramic views of the Himalayan foothills, making it a must-visit destination for nature lovers and tea enthusiasts alike.

The estate operates sustainably, using organic and biodynamic farming practices, which ensure that the tea remains of the highest quality. A guided tour takes visitors through the entire tea-making process, from plucking fresh leaves to processing them into traditional black tea, green tea, and more exotic specialty varieties.

History of Happy Valley Tea Estate

The Happy Valley Tea Estate was established in 1854 by David Wilson, a British tea planter. Later, in 1929, it was purchased by T P Banerjee, a wealthy Bengali businessman. Banerjee expanded the estate by acquiring the nearby Windsor Estate, which eventually merged with Happy Valley to form the vast plantation we see today.

The guided tea tours at Happy Valley provide an immersive experience into the world of Darjeeling tea. The tour runs daily from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM, giving visitors a close-up look at how tea is produced. Participants can walk through the lush tea gardens, observe the different stages of tea processing, and learn about the history and evolution of the estate. The tour also includes a tea-tasting session, where guests can sample the world-renowned Darjeeling teas, appreciating their distinct flavors and aromas.

  • Tour Fee: INR 100 per person (closed from November to February)
  • Tea Varieties: Family Mixture, Green Tea, Black Tea, Herbal Infusion, White Tea, and the exquisite SFTGFOP.

The estate also has a factory boutique, where visitors can purchase these premium teas either during the tour or online through the official website.
