History of the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute
The establishment of HMI can be credited to the successful ascent of Mount Everest by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary in 1953. This feat, along with the vision of Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, led to the creation of the institute. The institute was initially set up at Roy Villa but later moved to its current location in Darjeeling, the hometown of Tenzing Norgay. It was here that Norgay spent much of his later years, even serving as the Director of Field Training at HMI.
