Located near Delhi Gate in the Rauza Bagh area of Aurangabad, Himayat Bagh is a beautiful 400-acre garden that dates back to the 17th century during the reign of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. Today, Himayat Bagh is not only a historical site but also serves as part of Marathwada University, housing a Fruit Research Station. Barra Darri: A Marvel of Mughal Engineering
One of the unique features of Himayat Bagh is the Barra Darri, an underground water chamber built by Ivaz Khan. This chamber is celebrated for its ingenious design, as it was created to function as a natural air-conditioning system, cooling the entire garden. Though the system is no longer operational, it continues to be studied as an example of Mughal engineering brilliance. Today, the Barra Darri also houses the office of the Fruit Research Station.
History of Himayat Bagh
Himayat Bagh was established during the Mughal Empire, under the rule of Emperor Aurangzeb in the 17th century. The garden originated when Aurangzeb decided to convert a portion of land, originally in front of his office, into fields after the northern wall of his palace was damaged by dampness and exhalation. He ordered this area to be filled and turned into fields, which later became the beautiful garden we know today. The garden was named Himayat Bagh by one of Aurangzeb’s court officials, and its historical and cultural significance has only grown over the centuries.
