Nestled across the mighty Mahanadi River in Sambalpur, Odisha, the Hirakud Dam is a remarkable feat of engineering and one of the longest dams in India, stretching over 56 kilometers. A popular spot for both locals and tourists, the Hirakud Dam is famous for its drive-through road, which extends 21 kilometers across the dam, providing panoramic views of the surrounding area. Visitors can take in breathtaking sights from two observation towers — the Gandhi Minar and Nehru Minar — located at opposite ends of the dam. These towers offer some of the best views of the dam and its artificial lake, the Hirakud Reservoir, which boasts a 639-kilometer shoreline.

- By Rail: The closest railway stations are Sambalpur Railway Station and Khetrajpur Railway Station, both within a short distance of the dam. Trains from major cities like Bhubaneswar and Kolkata frequently connect to Sambalpur.
- By Road: Buses and taxis are readily available from Sambalpur (3 km away) and other nearby towns. The dam is well-connected via Highway 6.
