Overview
Nestled in the heart of Panjim, the Immaculate Conception Church is one of the oldest and most beloved churches in Goa. Built in 1541, this historic church is a perfect blend of Portuguese Baroque architecture and cultural heritage. Perched atop a hill, it is best known for its two large bell towers. These bells, which were once salvaged from the Augustinian ruins of the Church of Our Lady of Grace in Old Goa, are the second largest bells in the state.
The church’s exterior is a pristine white, symbolizing the purity of the Virgin Mary. The zigzag staircase leading up to the church adds to its charm, and the view of the sunset from the hilltop is breathtaking. At night, the illuminated church provides a calming and picturesque sight.
History and Architecture
Originally constructed to serve the religious needs of Portuguese sailors, the church became a parish in 1600 and underwent expansion in the following years. Today, it stands as one of the iconic structures in Panjim, with its distinctive Baroque design. The church’s interior is colorful yet simple, with the main altar dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Statues of St. Peter and St. Paul, along with St. Francis Xavier, grace the church’s altars, which are adorned with intricate carvings and beautiful artwork.
