Overview
Nestled in the serene Man Sagar Lake, Jal Mahal is a breathtaking palace that seems to float on water. Surrounded by the lush Nahargarh Hills, this stunning creation was built in the 1750s by Maharaja Madho Singh as a hunting lodge. With its unique architecture blending Mughal and Rajput styles, the palace has become one of the most photographed monuments in India. While only one floor is visible above water, four floors remain submerged beneath the lake. A must-see for anyone visiting Jaipur!
History
The exact origins of Jal Mahal are unclear, but it’s believed to have been built by either Maharaja Madho Singh I or Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh in the late 18th century. The palace was later renovated by Maharaja Jai Singh II. While originally not meant to be a palace, it was enhanced with ornate details, including a beautiful garden called Chameli Bagh.
Architecture
Built from red sandstone, Jal Mahal has four submerged floors and is topped by a stunning garden. The palace features octagonal chhatris at each corner and 21 intricately carved pillars that once served as cenotaphs for the royal family. While entry to the palace is prohibited, the picturesque setting can be admired from a distance.

Birdwatching
Once a haven for migratory birds, Jal Mahal is now home to species like the common moorhen and blue-tailed bee-eaters. An annual bird fair raises awareness about the lake’s ecosystem.
