Overview of Japanese Peace Pagoda, Darjeeling

Nestled on the serene slopes of Jalapahar Hill in Darjeeling, the Japanese Peace Pagoda (also known as Japanese Peace Pagoda) is a symbol of peace and goodwill. Its purpose is to promote harmony among people from different backgrounds and faiths. This stunning structure is not only a place for spiritual solace but also offers panoramic views of the majestic Kanchenjunga and other snow-covered peaks, making it a perfect spot for nature and peace lovers.

The pagoda was built under the guidance of Nichidatsu Fujii, a Japanese Buddhist monk, and the foundation stone was laid on 3rd November 1972. It was inaugurated on 1st November 1992, after 36 months of construction. Its serene atmosphere and scenic views have made it a popular destination for both locals and tourists alike.

The Architecture of the Japanese Peace Pagoda

Designed by M. Ohka, the Peace Pagoda stands tall at a height of 28.5 meters with a 23-meter diameter, making it the tallest free-standing structure in Darjeeling. The pagoda features intricately carved images of the four avatars of Buddha: Maitreya Buddha, and sculptures depicting the Buddha in different postures—sitting, sleeping, standing, and meditating. These figures are polished in golden hues, creating a tranquil atmosphere for reflection.

The pagoda is surrounded by beautiful artwork depicting the life and teachings of Buddha. Mythological scenes such as the Gift of Mango Grove by Amrapali at Vaishali and the Great Departure of Siddhartha are etched into the sandstone walls. The pagoda’s design is not only a visual treat but also a reminder of Buddha's message of peace and compassion.
