History of Kanpur Museum:
The museum's story dates back to the era of colonial India when European merchants wanted a venue for cultural activities. In 1910, after the death of King Edward VII, the building was re-established as the King Edward Memorial Hall in honor of his visit to Kanpur in 1876. After World War I, the hall was repurposed for various activities, including private events and cultural performances.
Post-Independence, the building was renamed Gandhi Bhawan and served as both a public library and an official museum. Today, it stands as an important landmark that represents Kanpur’s historical journey through colonial times to independence.
