Also known as Vishwanath Temple, Kashi Vishwanath is one of India’s most revered temples, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Located on the western bank of the Ganga in Varanasi, it is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. The temple features a golden spire, with 800 kg of gold plating, and houses other smaller shrines to deities like Kaalbhairav, Vishnu, and Vinayaka.

History:
This ancient temple has been destroyed and rebuilt several times throughout history, with the current structure being rebuilt in 1780 by Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar. The temple has deep cultural significance and is believed to grant devotees liberation or moksha after visiting and bathing in the Ganges.

Architecture:
The temple complex includes a series of smaller shrines, and the main Shivalinga, made of black stone, is enshrined in a silver altar. The temple’s golden dome and spire make it an architectural marvel.

Vishwanath Gali:
To reach the temple, visitors pass through the bustling Vishwanath Gali, lined with shops selling pooja items, Banarasi sarees, jewelry, and snacks. It's an ideal place for some affordable shopping after the darshan.

How to Reach:
The temple is about 5 km from Varanasi Railway Station. Auto-rickshaws or taxis can take you close to the temple, though the last stretch must be walked as the road to the temple is not motorable.

Dress Code:
Men must wear a Dhoti-Kurta, and women must wear a Saree to enter the temple sanctum for Sparsh Darshan. Western attire is allowed outside the sanctum.
