Overview
Madh Island, a peaceful retreat located off Mumbai’s coast, offers a blend of villages, farmlands, and scenic views. Popular as a weekend getaway for the city's elite, this island is a haven of tranquility with its quaint settlements, lush farms, and serene surroundings. Surrounded by the Arabian Sea on the west and Malad Creek on the east, Madh Island is home to diverse communities, including Kolis, Marathis, and Roman Catholics. It’s also known for its luxurious resorts and its role as a filming location for several movies and TV shows.

Madh Island is accessible via a scenic ferry ride from Versova, providing a peaceful escape from the city’s hustle and bustle.

Madh Island Beach
Madh Island Beach, located on the island's north-western coast, offers a calm and peaceful atmosphere. The beach, with its fishing villages and picturesque setting, is perfect for a quiet picnic or sunbathing. Although swimming is not advised due to strong currents, the beach’s serene sunrises, sunsets, and fishing boats create a charming, laid-back vibe.

Madh Island Fort
The 17th-century Madh Fort, built by the Portuguese as a watchtower, offers spectacular views of the coastline. Though the fort's interiors are in a dilapidated state, it remains an important landmark and a popular shooting location for Bollywood films and TV shows like CID. The fort is under the control of the Indian Air Force, so prior permission is needed for access.

Madh Island Church
Madh Island is home to the charming Our Lady of the Sea Church, a remnant of Portuguese architecture. Although the church is mostly in ruins, it still contains some ancient paintings and offers a glimpse into the island's colonial past.

Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to visit Madh Island is between September and March when the weather is cooler and more comfortable. The hot and humid months should be avoided.

Tips for Visiting Madh Island

  1. Engage with the friendly local villagers to make your visit more memorable.
  2. Consider renting a bungalow for a more comfortable stay rather than opting for resorts.
  3. Avoid swimming in the waters due to unsafe tides.
