Overview
The Mahatma Gandhi Setu, one of the longest river bridges in India, stands as a monumental connection between Patna and Hajipur. Spanning an impressive 5.7 kilometers across the Ganges River, this architectural marvel is the second longest bridge in India, after the Bhupen Hazarika Setu in Assam. Named in honor of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, the bridge plays a crucial role in connecting the capital city of Patna to Hajipur in northern Bihar.
The bridge, featuring four lanes for vehicles and pedestrian pathways on each side, has become an indispensable part of daily transportation. It offers breathtaking views of the sacred Ganges flowing beneath, making it not only a vital transport link but also a scenic route. While toll gates were once operational, they have since been removed by the government, easing the passage for commuters.
Currently, the National Highway 19 runs through this bridge, facilitating a smooth connection between these two bustling regions of Bihar. Due to increasing traffic, the government has plans to build two Pontoon Bridges parallel to the Gandhi Setu to alleviate congestion. Before the bridge was constructed, people relied on ferries or boats to travel between Patna and Hajipur, highlighting the bridge's critical role in regional connectivity.
