The Masani Amman Temple, also known as Arulmigu Masani Amman Temple or Annamalai Masani Amman Temple, is a revered spiritual site located in Annamalai, a Panchayat Town in the Coimbatore district. The temple’s legend is deeply rooted in the history of the region. According to the tale, when Lord Rama was on his journey to rescue Goddess Sita, he encountered Masani Amman, the embodiment of Parasakti. Legend says that Lord Rama, on learning of the goddess’s power, created an idol of Masani from the sand of a crematorium (Mayana Sayani). This idol was created in a reclining posture and offered prayers before continuing his journey. Annamalai, where the temple stands, was once known as Umbarkadu in ancient Sangam Literature.
The temple also features the Neethi Kal (Justice Stone), where devotees offer ground chilies to recover stolen possessions. Some visitors even write their worries on paper and tie it around the hands of the deity, hoping for solutions within 90 days.
The Legend Behind Masani Amman Temple
The legend of the temple traces back to an ancient story of Nannur, a ruler of Annamalai, who owned vast lands and orchards. He was known for imposing severe punishments on anyone who trespassed or picked fruit without permission. One day, a woman, unaware of the rules, ate a mango and was caught. Despite her pleas for forgiveness, the ruler sentenced her to death. The villagers, enraged by the injustice, fought back and killed the ruler. In honor of the woman, a shrine was built in her memory, and she was named Masani Devi. Masani refers to graveyard, symbolizing her connection with the resting place of souls.
How to Reach Masani Amman Temple
The Masani Amman Temple is situated in Annamalai, approximately 30 km from Coimbatore. The temple is easily accessible by car, taxi, or private vehicle. From the city center, it takes around 45 minutes to reach the temple via Coimbatore-Annamalai Road. Public transport options like buses are also available for those traveling on a budget.
It is advised to travel by car or taxi for a smoother experience as there can be limited parking spaces and occasional traffic. However, the spiritual ambiance of the temple makes the journey worthwhile.
