Nestled in the serene stretch of North Goa, Morjim Beach is a peaceful escape known for its Olive Ridley Turtle nesting site. This tranquil 3 km long beach is perfect for long walks, watching breathtaking sunsets, or simply relaxing at the beach shacks. Morjim is affectionately called “Turtle Beach”, as it serves as a nesting ground for the endangered Olive Ridley turtles. The nesting season begins in September and can last until March.
Due to a large influx of Russian tourists, Morjim is often referred to as “Little Russia”. The beach area boasts Russian signage, restaurants serving both Russian and Goan cuisine, and Russian-style shops offering unique souvenirs. Popular activities include water sports, dolphin watching, kite flying, and of course, enjoying the serene vibe of the beach.
Olive Ridley Turtles
Morjim is renowned for being a sanctuary for the endangered Olive Ridley turtles, with successful nesting efforts documented since the late 1990s. These turtles are protected under India's Wildlife Protection Act. Visitors can witness these turtles in their natural habitat, making for an unforgettable sight.
Food at Morjim Beach
The presence of Russian tourists has influenced the local food scene, with many beachside eateries offering both Russian and Goan delicacies. Try delicious dishes such as Shakshuka, Borscht, and local favorites like Sorpotel and Cafreal. Notable restaurants include Hakuna Matata, Bora Bora, and La Plage, serving an assortment of mouthwatering meals and fresh seafood.
How to Reach Morjim Beach
Morjim Beach is located 13 km from Mapusa and can be easily reached via bike or taxi. If you're coming from Mapusa, take the Duler - Marna - Siolim Road. From the Arambol or Ashwem areas, use the Querim - Arambol - Agarwada Road to get to the beach. The most economical and convenient way to explore Goa is by hiring a scooter. Alternatively, a taxi from Mapusa will cost around INR 400.
