Overview
Patna Sahib Gurudwara, one of the holiest sites for Sikhs, is located on the banks of the holy Ganges in Patna, Bihar. The Gurudwara commemorates the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru of the Sikh community. This sacred site is a major pilgrimage destination and is the second of the five Takhts (seats of authority) in Sikhism, making it a center of spiritual significance.

The Gurudwara is renowned for its Ardaas (morning prayer) performed at 5:45 A.M. and evening prayer at 6:00 P.M. The Langar (free meal service) is offered to all visitors, encouraging community service and devotion. Prakash Parv, the birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh, is celebrated in December with great fervor, attracting thousands of pilgrims.

Historical Significance
Patna Sahib is not only the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh but also a historical center for Sikhism in Eastern India. The Gurudwara’s construction dates back to the 19th century and was later rebuilt by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1839. It has witnessed both destruction and restoration, with the most significant repairs completed in 1954 after an earthquake in 1934. The site, once known as Kaccha Farukh Khan, now houses the Harmandir Takht, one of the holiest seats in Sikhism.

Dress Code
There is no strict dress code; however, visitors are encouraged to wear light, modest, and respectful clothing. Head coverings (scarves or handkerchiefs) are mandatory for all visitors inside the Gurudwara.

Inside the Gurudwara, visitors can explore a museum that houses sacred artifacts related to Guru Gobind Singh, including handwritten orders (Hukumnamas), a sacred sword, ivory sandals, and a golden cradle. The Harminder Gali surrounding the Gurudwara offers various shops selling Sikh cultural items, including bamboo and leather products, ideal for souvenirs.

  • By Road: Shared autos, local cabs, and e-rickshaws are commonly used for reaching the Gurudwara. The journey from Patna Junction to the Gurudwara can be completed in about 30 minutes by auto.
  • Public Transport: Given the narrow lanes around the Gurudwara, public transport or taxis are recommended for ease of access.

Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to visit Patna Sahib Gurudwara is during the winter months (October to February) when the weather is cooler and more pleasant. The Prakash Parv in December is the most popular time to visit, with grand celebrations attracting large crowds. Avoid visiting during the hot summer months (March to June) or the monsoon season (July to September) due to extreme weather conditions.
