Overview of Raj Dinakar Kelkar Museum, Pune
Located in Shukawar Peth on Bajirao Road, the Raj Dinakar Kelkar Museum was founded in 1962 by Baba Dinkar Kelkar in memory of his late son. Managed by the Department of Archaeology, Government of Maharashtra, the museum is a treasure trove of over 15,000 artifacts, spanning various historical periods and cultures. The collection includes Mughal lamps, musical instruments, intricately carved doors, terracotta pottery, brass vessels, and paintings depicting scenes from the Ramayana. These exhibits were carefully gathered by Baba Dinkar during his travels across India, many of which date back to the 17th century, showcasing the grandeur of the Mughal and Maratha empires.
The museum's centerpiece is a stunning replica of the Mastani Mahal, originally built in 1734. This room, with its grand chandeliers, artistic decor, and royal ambiance, offers visitors a glimpse into the opulence of Indian royalty. Despite the museum initially opening with 20,000 exhibits, today, 15,000 pieces are on display, each narrating a unique story of India's rich cultural heritage.
