Rajwada Palace: A Glimpse into Indore's Royal Past
Located in the bustling city of Indore, Rajwada Palace stands as a majestic reminder of the city’s royal legacy. A masterpiece of historical architecture, this seven-storied palace was constructed over 200 years ago by the founder of the Holkar dynasty, Malhar Rao Holkar. Situated near the famous Kajuri Market, Rajwada is an exquisite blend of architectural styles, including Maratha, Mughal, and French influences, making it a unique and captivating historical attraction.
The palace faces a beautifully landscaped garden that features a statue of Queen Ahilya Bai, the revered queen of Indore, an artificial waterfall, and mesmerizing fountains, offering a serene ambiance amid the vibrant urban surroundings. By Air:
The nearest airport to Rajwada Palace is the Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport in Indore, located about 8 km from the palace. The airport is well-connected to major cities in India, and taxis or private cars are readily available to take you to the palace.
By Rail:
Indore has a well-connected railway station, Indore Junction, which is approximately 3-4 km from Rajwada. From the station, you can easily hire a rickshaw, auto, or taxi to reach the palace in just a few minutes.
By Road:
Rajwada Palace is centrally located in Indore and is easily accessible by road. You can take a private vehicle or use public transport from any part of the city. The palace is situated near M.G. Road and Imli Bazaar Road, making it conveniently reachable.
History of Rajwada Palace
Built in 1747 A.D. by Malhar Rao Holkar, Rajwada Palace was initially a grand residence and the heart of Indore’s trade and commerce. Over the centuries, the palace has experienced multiple devastations due to fires, but its resilience has ensured its place in history.
- First Fire (1801): The palace was set ablaze by Sarjerao Ghadge, a commander of the Sindhiya dynasty, which led to significant damage.
- Reconstruction (1818-1826): The lower floors were rebuilt using stone, and five new floors were constructed.
- Second Fire (1834): The topmost floor was destroyed.
- Third Fire (1984): The most destructive fire resulted in the loss of the back part of the palace, including the Malhari Martand Temple inside.
Today, the palace has been beautifully restored, and the front portion of the structure stands tall, showcasing its former glory. The recently restored garden area includes fountains, sculptures, and a tranquil setting for visitors to explore.
Rajwada Palace Architecture
The architecture of Rajwada Palace is an amalgamation of various styles that reflect the cultural richness of Indore. The Mughal influence is visible from the southern side of the palace, while the European (French) touch is seen from the eastern side. The Ganesha Hall and the Darbar Hall reflect French architecture, while the wooden elements and stone construction speak to the historical craftsmanship of the time.
The palace entrance features a towering archway with iron-studded wooden doors, leading to an expansive courtyard. The lower floors of the palace are constructed from stone, while the upper floors use wood, giving the structure a distinctive aesthetic. The palace’s balconies, windows, and corridors provide a magnificent view of the surroundings, offering glimpses of both the royal life and the city beyond.
In 2006, the Maharani of Indore, H.H. Ushadevi Holkar, initiated the restoration of Rajwada, ensuring the preservation of the palace’s regal charm. The restoration used traditional materials and methods, making it the first structure in the country to be reconstructed with such authenticity.
Light and Sound Show at Rajwada
One of the most captivating experiences at Rajwada is the Sound and Light Show, held from Tuesday to Sunday at 6:30 PM. The show brings to life the rich history of the palace and the Holkar dynasty, narrating tales of its grandeur, struggles, and triumphs through an immersive visual and auditory experience. It’s an absolute must-watch for history enthusiasts and anyone interested in learning more about Indore’s royal past.

While the palace itself is an architectural marvel, there are several other fascinating features:
- The Rani Ahilya Throne: A beautifully sculpted throne that was once used by Queen Ahilya Bai, a beloved figure in Indore’s history.
