Overview
The Ramakrishna Math in Lucknow, established in 1987, is an awe-inspiring monastery that blends Hindu and Islamic architectural elements. This serene structure also reflects the architectural grandeur of ancient Indian dynasties, showcasing a beautiful combination of traditional styles.
The temple at Ramakrishna Math is home to a magnificent marble-finished entryway, adorned with stone carvings of mythical creatures and characters from Hindu mythology. The main sanctum, crowned with nine white domes, is surrounded by intricately carved gates, infusing the temple with a Rajasthani architectural touch, complemented by a classic Mughal influence. The prayer hall inside boasts a stunning white and brown marble floor, complemented by an elaborate chandelier featuring over 250 lights.
History
The Ramakrishna Math grew from the spiritual teachings of Swami Vivekananda in 1857. His travels and talks about Sri Ramakrishna spread the essence of the philosophy across India. These discussions with Lucknow’s Nawabs during 1888 and 1889 eventually led to the foundation of the first Ramakrishna Mission Sevashram in 1925. The current temple, built near the original holy site, continues to be a beacon of peace and devotion.
How to Reach
Ramakrishna Math is centrally located and easily accessible from Lucknow Railway Station (approximately 5 km). It can be reached by auto-rickshaws, taxis, or public transport. The nearest metro station is about a 10-minute drive away.
