As the oldest fort in Goa, this 15th-century Portuguese fort has witnessed centuries of change. Originally constructed as a defense fortress, it was later repurposed as a prison and even a hospital before being abandoned and left in ruins. Thankfully, the fort was restored and opened to the public in 2012, preserving its historical legacy for generations to come.
The fort is easily recognizable with its striking reddish walls, and it offers breathtaking views of the surrounding area. From its elevated position, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the beautiful landscape, including the River Bardez and Panjim.
Listed under the Goa Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, the fort is an important cultural and historical landmark in Goa. Inside, you will find four engaging galleries:
- Freedom Fighter’s Gallery
- Art Gallery
- History & Restoration Hall
- Gunloops
The architecture of Reis Magos Fort is a beautiful fusion of Portuguese and Indian styles, making it a fascinating stop for history and architecture enthusiasts. The fort also hosts a variety of cultural events, including exhibitions, performances, fairs, and festivals, aimed at showcasing the rich heritage of Goa.
