Overview:

Royapuram Fishing Harbour, managed by the Chennai Port Trust, is one of the busiest fishing hubs in Tamil Nadu. Known for its bustling atmosphere, it is where fishermen bring in their fresh catch, from large boats to small catamarans. The harbour is a central point for seafood trade, with an auction hall drawing thousands of buyers daily, including wholesalers from Kerala and Karnataka.

With over 200 tonnes of seafood sold each day, including fish, prawns, lobsters, and crabs, the harbour is a must-visit for seafood enthusiasts. Nearby, the Kasimedu Fishing Harbour Market offers fresh catches at around 90 stalls. Visitors can also see boat-building activities at the pier.

History:

Established in 1984, the harbour has been a key fishing ground since the 1700s, though it faced setbacks during the 2004 tsunami. It currently houses around 1,400 boats, far exceeding its original capacity.

How to Reach:

Located in Kasimedu Village, the harbour is best accessed by car, especially in the early hours when public transport options are limited.
