Overview
Rumi Darwaza, an iconic landmark in Lucknow, stands as a testament to the grandeur of Awadhi architecture. This 60-foot-tall gateway, located between the Bara Imambara and Chota Imambara, is one of the most recognizable structures in the city. Often referred to as the "Turkish Gate," Rumi Darwaza is modeled after the Bab-i-Humayun gate in Turkey. It was built by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula in the late 18th century and has been a symbol of Lucknow’s cultural and architectural splendor.
The construction of Rumi Darwaza has a heartwarming backstory. During the 1748 famine, Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula initiated a food-for-work program, providing meals to the people of Lucknow in exchange for their labor in constructing this magnificent gateway. The gateway not only fed the people but also became a proud monument for future generations.
Today, Rumi Darwaza stands tall amidst the busy streets of Lucknow, offering a glimpse into the city's regal past. It is particularly mesmerizing when illuminated at night, casting a magical glow over the city.
Architecture
Rumi Darwaza's design is a blend of Indo-Islamic and Awadhi styles. The structure is built from limestone, which allowed for intricate carvings of flowers, leaves, and other ornamental designs. At the top of the gate is a small octagonal platform known as the "chhatri" or umbrella, which offers panoramic views of the surroundings. This elevated platform was once used for vigilance and to light lanterns during the night, adding a functional yet artistic touch to the gateway.
The gateway features four minarets at each corner and spans a wide area, making it look more like a building than just a gate. Its detailed craftsmanship is a reflection of the skilled artisans of the era.
How to Reach
Rumi Darwaza is centrally located and can be easily accessed from various parts of Lucknow. It is just 5.5 km from Lucknow Junction, the nearest railway station. Visitors can hire a taxi, auto-rickshaw, or car to reach the monument. For a more affordable option, cycle-rickshaws are also readily available. Rumi Darwaza is well-connected by road, and with its central location, you’ll have no trouble finding it.
