Overview
The Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad, developed along the Sabarmati River, is a prime example of sustainable development. What started as an environmental initiative has transformed into a popular tourist destination, offering lush promenades, scenic parks, and a peaceful atmosphere.
Facilities & Attractions
The riverfront features ample seating along a two-tiered walkway. The lower level is dedicated to walking, jogging, and cycling, while the upper level hosts cultural events and markets. Popular markets include the Riverfront Market and Ravivari Market. Visitors can also enjoy boating along the river or visit the nearby Dhobi Ghat. Facilities like restrooms and accessible stairways and elevators are available for convenience.
History
The city of Ahmedabad, founded in 1411, faced frequent flooding and pollution from the Sabarmati River. To address this, the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Project, led by French architect Bernard Kohn, was initiated in 1997. The project has since expanded, with renovations extending the waterfront to 11.5 km by 2012.
How to Reach
The Sabarmati Riverfront is located just 3-4 km from the city center. The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport is 10 km away, while the Ahmedabad Railway Station is 4-5 km, both easily accessible by a short drive.
