Sahastrabahu Temple, Udaipur Overview
Located about 20 km from Udaipur in the village of Nagda, the Sahastrabahu Temple, commonly known as the Saas Bahu Temple, is a historical complex dating back to the 10th century. Surrounded by a picturesque landscape, this temple is renowned for its exceptional architecture and cultural significance. It is believed to symbolize ancient familial bonds while also honoring Lord Vishnu.
The temple complex consists of two main temples, each surrounded by smaller shrines on a shared platform. Designed in the Maru-Gurjara architectural style, both temples face east and feature a mandapa with open projections, an open porch, and brick shikharas, many of which are in ruins. The entrance is marked by a torana-style gateway, adorned with a decorative cusped arch atop four columns.
The intricate carvings on the temples' pillars, walls, arches, and roofs depict various deities and mythological scenes. Inside the temple, you’ll find idols of Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma, Goddess Saraswati, and other figures, alongside finely crafted sculptures of Lord Ram and Lord Balram. This serene and beautiful temple is a must-visit for those interested in exploring Udaipur's rich history and architectural heritage.
