Overview of Santa Cruz Basilica
Located in the heart of Fort Kochi, Santa Cruz Basilica is one of the eight basilicas in India and a prime example of gothic architecture. Built by the Portuguese in 1505, this historic church features beautiful frescoes, stained glass windows, and impressive paintings that tell the story of Christ. The church is significant for Kochi’s Christian community and is considered one of the oldest churches in India.

History and Significance
Santa Cruz Basilica was originally founded by Portuguese Viceroy Francesco de Almeida in 1505. After being destroyed by the Dutch in 1663 and again by the British in 1795, it was rebuilt in the late 19th century. The basilica was elevated to its current status by Pope John Paul II in 1984.

Architectural Beauty
The church blends Indo-European and Gothic styles, with stunning wooden panels and intricate Italian paintings. The ceiling is adorned with murals depicting the life of Christ, while the pastel-colored interior and stained-glass windows add to its charm. Two towering spires stand tall, welcoming visitors from afar.
