Overview of Saptashrungi Temple, Nashik
Nestled in the serene hills of Saptashrungi, located around 60 km from Nashik, the Saptashrungi Temple is a revered Hindu pilgrimage site that draws thousands of devotees each year. This sacred temple is dedicated to Devi Saptashrungi Nivasini, a form of Shakti, and is considered one of the Shaktipeeths—a place where a part of the body of Devi Sati, Lord Shiva’s consort, is believed to have fallen.
The temple is surrounded by a majestic landscape of seven mountain peaks, known as the Saptashrungi, offering breathtaking views and spiritual serenity. A significant part of the temple is its self-manifested idol of the goddess, which stands 8 feet tall, adorned in vibrant colors and magnificent jewelry. The temple is not only a religious site but also a spot of natural beauty, with 108 water bodies (kundas) and medicinal forests.
Legends of Saptashrungi Temple
The legend of Saptashrungi is deeply entwined with the mythological story of Devi Sati and her tragic self-immolation, leading to her body parts being scattered across India. It is believed that one of Devi Sati's right arms fell on the Saptashrungi hills, making it a sacred site for worship. The goddess here is revered for her role in defeating the demon Mahishasura as Devi Durga, symbolized by a buffalo statue at the temple’s entrance.
Additionally, the temple is tied to the Ramayana where Lord Hanuman is said to have visited these hills while searching for the Sanjeevani herb to revive Lakshman, and Lord Ram is believed to have visited with Sita and Lakshman to seek the blessings of the goddess.
Rituals and Worship at Saptashrungi Temple
The temple is a place of daily rituals and vibrant celebrations. Devi Saptashrungi Nivasini, with her 18 arms, holds powerful weapons to destroy evil forces. Her idol is adorned with beautiful jewelry, including a crown, necklaces, and nose-ring. On special occasions, the goddess is dressed in exquisite attire and decorated with costly ornaments, which are safely kept in the temple’s custody when not in use. Before worship, a formal Abhishek (bath) is performed, followed by her daily dressing ritual.
