Scandal Point Overview
Scandal Point is one of Shimla's most captivating and talked-about locations, blending both scenic views and fascinating history. Situated at the intersection of Ridge Road and Mall Road, this spot offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, which are blanketed with dense fir and spruce trees. It’s a must-visit destination for both history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
At Scandal Point, you’ll not only get to enjoy the view but also witness a piece of Shimla’s intriguing past. The site is often regarded as a symbol of scandal and romance due to its association with a dramatic love story involving the British Viceroy's daughter and Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala.
The Story Behind Scandal Point
The name "Scandal Point" originates from a juicy love affair that took place in 1892, involving the British Viceroy’s daughter and the Maharaja of Patiala, Bhupinder Singh. The young woman, reluctantly relocated to Shimla by her father, soon fell in love with Maharaja Bhupinder Singh. When Lord Kitchener, the British Viceroy, discovered the romance, he was furious. Despite his objections, the couple eloped from this very spot, forever associating Scandal Point with their love story.
Though versions of the story vary—some claim that Maharaja Bhupinder Singh kidnapped the Viceroy’s daughter—what remains constant is the dramatic tale of rebellion and forbidden love. This scandalous event became the talk of the town for years, cementing Scandal Point as one of Shimla's most intriguing locations.
