Overview:
Shaniwar Wada, a 286-year-old palace, once served as the residence of the Peshwa rulers in Pune. Built by Bajirao I, it’s now a top tourist attraction and a magnificent example of Maratha architecture. Though much of it was destroyed by a fire in 1828, its remaining grandeur, including fountains, forts, and the statue of Bajirao I, still captivates visitors. The palace is steeped in history, with tales of intrigue, treachery, and romance, notably the love affair between Bajirao I and Mastani.
History:
Constructed in 1730, Shaniwar Wada was initially planned as a seven-story palace. However, due to opposition, it was built using bricks instead of stone. Over the years, it survived British attacks and a mysterious fire that reduced it to ruins, leaving behind only remnants of its former glory, including gates, bastions, and teak gateways.
Haunted Legend:
Shaniwar Wada is also known for its eerie tales, particularly the tragic murder of Peshwa Narayan Rao. His spirit is said to haunt the palace, with visitors claiming to hear his desperate cries for help on certain nights.
Light and Sound Show:
The Light and Sound show at Shaniwar Wada is a must-see, offering an immersive experience of the palace's rich history. The show runs daily, with Marathi and English versions available.
Tips for Visitors:
- Avoid visiting during peak summer (April-May) due to heat.
- Wear comfortable shoes for walking on rugged paths.
- Carry water as there are no food or drink facilities inside.
- For the best experience, visit in the morning or evening.
How to Reach:
Located in the heart of Pune, Shaniwar Wada is easily accessible by local transport, including buses, auto-rickshaws, and taxis. It’s also included in the Pune Darshan tours.
