Overview
St. Paul's Cathedral in Kolkata is a stunning example of Indo-Gothic architecture and an iconic symbol of the city’s colonial past. Built to accommodate Kolkata's growing Christian community, this is Asia's first Episcopalian church and one of the largest in India. Its towering spire, intricate stained-glass windows, and serene surroundings make it a must-visit landmark. The cathedral looks especially enchanting during Christmas, with the entire area illuminated in festive lights.
History & Architecture
The cathedral’s foundation was laid in 1839, and it was consecrated in 1847. Designed by Major William Nairn Forbes, it draws inspiration from the Norwich Cathedral and was revamped after the 1934 earthquake. The structure combines traditional Gothic elements with adaptations to suit Kolkata's tropical climate. Inside, visitors can admire frescoes, stained-glass windows by Sir Edward Burne-Jones, and the beautifully carved reredos depicting scenes from St. Paul's life.
