History of St. Philomena's Church

St. Philomena’s Church was originally established in 1840 as a smaller church under the name of St. Joseph Chavez. After eight years of work, the grand structure that we see today was completed in 1941.

The church is named after Saint Philomena, a Greek princess who was martyred in the 4th century. Despite being offered marriage by Emperor Diocletian, Saint Philomena remained devoted to God and was ultimately executed for her refusal. The church houses her remains, which are preserved in a catacomb beneath the altar.
