About the Taj Mahal

A symbol of eternal love, the Taj Mahal was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died during childbirth in 1631. This stunning white marble mausoleum is one of the seven wonders of the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Completed in 1648, its design reflects Persian, Ottoman, and Indian influences. The monument, set in beautiful gardens, is known for its symmetry, intricate marble inlay work, and the poetic reflection in the Yamuna River.

Key Features

  • Construction: Began in 1632 and completed in 1653.
  • Design: A symmetrical layout with a central marble platform, minarets, and intricate carvings.
  • Tombs: The false tombs of Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan lie under the main dome.
  • Adjacent Structures: A mosque and a jawab (a symmetrical building) balance the Taj Mahal’s design.
