Overview of Toorji Ka Jhalra
Nestled in the heart of Jodhpur, Toorji Ka Jhalra (commonly known as the Stepwell of Jodhpur) is an architectural marvel that dates back to 1740. This intricately designed stepwell was built under the guidance of the Queen Consort of Maharaja Abhaya Singh during his reign. It stands as a testament to the innovative water management systems of Rajasthan, which have long served the region’s dry and arid environment.
Constructed from rose-red sandstone, the stepwell is over 200 feet deep, with a series of steps leading down to the water. The well was once adorned with sculptures of elephants, lions, goddesses, and deities, all intricately carved into the stone. Although it once served as a major water source for the local population, it fell into disuse over time as the city modernized. Thankfully, it has now been restored and is a popular spot for both tourists and locals.
The stepwell is a significant reminder of the vital role water management played in the region, with the architectural design facilitating access to groundwater throughout the year. Today, it is not only a historical site but also a popular place for visitors to cool off and enjoy the cool, serene atmosphere, especially during the hot months.
History and Architecture of Toorji Ka Jhalra
Built during the reign of Maharaja Abhai Singh in the 18th century, Toorji Ka Jhalra was one of many stepwells constructed to meet the water needs of Jodhpur’s people. The structure was designed to handle the fluctuating water table levels of the region. Bullock-powered Persian wheels once drew water from the well to supply the city.
The well is made of red sandstone and features a two-level access system. The lower level houses a separate water tank, and the upper level is equipped with a patio and Jharokhas (overhanging windows) that offer views of the entire structure. The architecture also includes small chambers for lighting lanterns, allowing people to navigate the well at night. Carvings of animals and deities, alongside elaborate stone water spouts, add to the stepwell’s beauty.
How to Reach Toorji Ka Jhalra
Toorji Ka Jhalra is conveniently located just 4.5 km from the center of Jodhpur, making it easily accessible for both locals and tourists. It is situated in Gulab Sagar Makrana Mohalla on Sutharo ka Bas Road.
- By Taxi or Auto Rickshaw: From the city center, you can easily hire a taxi or auto-rickshaw to take you directly to the stepwell.
- By Foot: Many visitors enjoy a leisurely walk from the Sardar Market or Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower), exploring the vibrant streets of Jodhpur along the way.
- By Public Transport: Buses and rickshaws are also available and connect major points in the city to the stepwell.
