Overview of Gurudwara Baba Deep Singh Ji, Amritsar

Located just outside the Chatiwind Gate in Amritsar, the Gurudwara Baba Deep Singh Ji stands as a powerful tribute to the bravery, sacrifice, and martyrdom of one of Sikhism's most revered warriors, Baba Deep Singh Ji. Also known as Shahidan Sahib, the Gurudwara honors Baba Deep Singh Ji for his heroic act during the 1757 invasion of Ahmed Shah Abdali. When the Afghani forces sought to destroy and defile the Golden Temple, Baba Deep Singh Ji led a courageous defense with thousands of other Sikh warriors.

Despite being fatally injured, Baba Deep Singh Ji remained steadfast in his vow to take his last breath at the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple). With immense determination, he made his way back to Amritsar, where he ultimately passed away. This memorial was originally built by Sardar Jassa Singh Ramgarhia in remembrance of his sacrifice. Later, in the 1920s, the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee developed the site into the Gurudwara Baba Deep Singh Ji that stands today, offering pilgrims a place of reflection and reverence.

Biography of Baba Deep Singh Ji

Baba Deep Singh Ji was born on 20th January 1682 in the village of Pahuwind in Amritsar to parents Bhagta Ji and Jioni. Hailing from a Sandhu Jat family, he was a devout Sikh from an early age. In 1700 AD, Baba Deep Singh Ji visited Anandpur during Vaisakhi and took the Sikh baptism. His commitment to Sikhism and his faith made him one of the greatest scholars of his time, and he became the leader of the Shaheedaan di Misl, a group of dedicated warriors.

Baba Deep Singh Ji was also well-versed in weaponry and horse riding, and his courage and leadership were displayed in many pivotal battles throughout the 18th century. His contributions to defending Sikhism, particularly during the turbulent period of Afghan invasions, cemented his place in Sikh history as a martyr and a symbol of bravery and selflessness.
